Are healthy foods really more expensive?

Are healthy foods really more expensive? Not necessarily.

In a recent report released by the USDA Economic Research Service, authors Andrea Carlson and Elizabeth Frazão note that there is more than one way to measure the price of food.

Considered on a price per calorie basis, healthy foods, such as vegetables and fruits, tend to be more expensive than less healthy foods, high in saturated fat and/or added sugars. However, using other metrics, such as price per edible weight or price per average portion, healthier foods tend to be less expensive.

Additionally, the authors suggest consumers consider the entire cost of their diets, including the nutrient density of foods and the total cost to meet dietary recommendations.
